Squeegees: Choosing the Right One for the Job

The squeegee is arguably the single most-used tool in a film installer's kit, and Flexfilm carries several distinct styles built for different surfaces and stages of the install.

Handled Squeegees

Handled squeegees give you the leverage and comfort needed for larger panels, windshields, and back glass installs. The handle lets you apply firm, even pressure across a wide area without straining your hand and wrist the way a small hard card would on a big surface.

Tube Squeegees

Tube squeegees use a wider contact edge for fast, even fluid removal across glass and panels — useful for quickly clearing slip solution from a large area before fine-detail work begins.

Squeegee Essentials & Hard Cards

Smaller hard cards and essential squeegees are built for precision work — edges, corners, and tight spaces where a large handled squeegee can't reach cleanly.

Durometer: Why Hardness Matters

Squeegee blades come in different hardness levels, often described using color or a durometer rating. Softer blades flex more and are gentler on delicate or textured surfaces, while harder blades apply more direct pressure and clear fluid more aggressively. Many installers keep more than one hardness on hand and choose based on the film, the surface, and how much pressure a given job calls for.

Technique Matters as Much as the Tool

Even the right squeegee won't save a rushed pass. Work in overlapping strokes from the center of the panel outward, using firm, consistent pressure to push both moisture and air out from underneath the film — see our heat shrinking and installation guides for the full technique.

Keeping Your Squeegees Clean

Grit or dried adhesive residue on a squeegee edge can scratch film or drag debris across a panel. Wipe blades down regularly during a job and inspect the edge for nicks before starting a new install.
