Pre-Installation Glass Assessment: What to Check Before Filming a Window
Before installing architectural film, a quick assessment of the glass and glazing system helps avoid problems down the road. This isn't about turning every job into a lab study — it's a practical checklist for catching the conditions most likely to cause thermal stress fracture or insulating glass (IG) seal problems after film goes on.
What to Look At
- Glass type: annealed or heat-treated (heat-strengthened/tempered). Heat-treated glass carries much lower thermal stress risk.
- Glass color: clear, or tinted/coated. Tinted and coated glass runs hotter under film and has a lower absorption ceiling before risk increases.
- Glass construction: monolithic, laminated, or insulating (IG). Laminated annealed glass is generally not a good candidate for solar control film at any thickness.
- Glass thickness and window size: checked against general thickness and area guidelines (see our Glass Breakage article for specifics).
- Framing system and edge bite: how much glass is encapsulated in the frame. Edge bite over 1/2 inch on annealed glass raises risk regardless of film.
- Moisture in the glazing system: signs of water intrusion or a malfunctioning weep system around IG units.
- Condition of glazing materials: gaskets, sealants, and tapes should be intact, not cracked, split, or squeezed out of position.
- Solar exposure: which direction the glass faces. South and west exposures see the most heat buildup; north-facing glass is lowest risk.
- Exterior shading patterns: straight-line shadows are generally fine; narrow perimeter shading is the riskiest pattern, especially on tinted or coated glass.
- Interior shading devices: check clearance between blinds/drapery and the glass to avoid trapping heat.
- Glass surface condition: visible scratches, chips, or other damage reduce glass strength and are a reason to hold off on filming.
- History of glass breakage: if unexplained breakage affects more than about 1% of the glass in a building, pause and investigate the cause before installing film.
The Frost Point Test for IG Units
For insulated glass units, a simplified frost point test can flag units that are in danger of imminent seal failure. Using a frost point tester — a copper tube instrument packed with dry ice and alcohol — installers hold the cold end against the exterior surface of the IG unit for 2 minutes (glass up to 1/8 inch) or 4 minutes (1/4 inch or thicker), then check the contact surface for ice, fog, or water buildup over 1/2 inch in diameter. A positive result indicates a seal leak, and film shouldn't be applied to that unit unless the building owner accepts the risk in writing. A clean result doesn't guarantee the seal will never fail, but it means the unit isn't in immediate danger.
When in Doubt
If any of these checks come back unfavorable, it's worth consulting the film manufacturer before proceeding. No two buildings are identical, and a manufacturer's specific data and experience can often support a more informed decision than general guidelines alone.
