Choosing Safety and Security Film for Schools and Commercial Buildings
For schools, offices, and other institutional buildings, safety and security film like Safetyflex is often evaluated as a way to slow down forced entry and buy time during an incident — time to alert responders and implement lockdown procedures. Here's what's important to understand when evaluating it for a building.
What Safety and Security Film Does — and Doesn't Do
Safety and security film is not bullet-resistant, and shouldn't be represented as a product that will stop bullets, even when installed on existing glazing. What it does well is hold glass together after it's broken — delaying entry through the opening and keeping dangerous glass fragments from flying into a room. That delay can matter during forced entry, windstorms, blasts, or earthquakes, and it applies alongside the film's other benefits: daytime visual security, UV protection, and comfort improvements from a solar control version.
Know Your Existing Glazing
Not every glazing configuration is a good candidate for safety and security film. Annealed and tempered glass generally push out and shatter when broken, differing mainly in shard size and sharpness; laminated and wired glass already hold together reasonably well on their own. Understanding what's currently installed helps determine whether film — ideally paired with an attachment system for best performance — is the right fit, or whether the glazing itself needs to be part of a broader security plan.
Determine the Level of Protection Needed
Consider whether the glazing is the first line of defense, or whether other physical barriers already slow down or hinder access to the building. That context shapes how much the film needs to accomplish on its own.
Understanding Test Reports vs. Demonstrations
Be cautious of demonstrations that claim a film will stop bullets — in many cases these are performed on glass that isn't representative of what's actually installed in schools or offices, and would provide bullet resistance with or without film. When reviewing a manufacturer's claims, look for:
- Independent, third-party witnessed test reports from an accredited test facility
- Test specimens that closely match the glass actually in your building
- A test procedure representative of the method of attack you're concerned about
Physical property specifications alone aren't representative of how a safety and security film will actually perform on installed glass. It's also worth noting that ASTM F3561-22 is not designed for retrofit solutions — citing it in a bid specification or submittal for an existing-glass retrofit isn't appropriate and can be misleading.
Practical Considerations
Installation can typically be scheduled during holidays, weekends, or other low-disruption windows, and most manufacturers of safety and security film offer strong technical support throughout the process.
