Architectural glass often exceeds the width of a single roll of film, especially on large storefront or curtain wall panes. Splicing joins two pieces of film into what should read as one continuous piece once finished — the same underlying principle used for splicing automotive rear windows, adapted for flat glass.
The Rule That Matters Most
Film isn't perfectly consistent edge to edge, even within the same roll. Splicing with two opposite edges from your rolled-out pieces risks a visible shade or color mismatch at the seam. Always splice using the same relative edge from both pieces — if you use the edge closest to you on the first piece, use that same edge on the second piece too.
Planning the Splice Line
Decide where the splice will fall before cutting any film. On architectural glass, look for a natural place to hide the seam — a mullion, a frame member, or another existing visual break in the glazing system works well, since it gives the eye something else to land on besides the seam itself. Plan the splice line consistently across matching panes on the same elevation so the finished look is uniform.
Step-by-Step Process
- Measure the full glass width and determine where the splice will fall.
- Cut and position the first piece, keeping track of which edge is being used for the splice.
- Position, squeegee, and finger the first piece as you normally would.
- Cut the second piece to the same width, using the identical edge for the splice.
- Position the second piece so it overlaps the first by roughly 1/4″ to 1/2″ past the planned splice line, then squeegee and finger it into place.
- With both pieces flat and overlapping at the splice line, trim the full perimeter as you normally would for a single-piece install.
- Cut the actual splice line slowly and steadily with a fresh blade, working along your planned line. Discard the excess overlap from both pieces once the cut is complete.
Aligning the Two Pieces
Install and align to the cut edges themselves, not to the piece still sitting nearby, which can throw off your alignment. Work to match the two cut edges as precisely as possible along the full length of the splice, and squeegee along the seam itself last, moving parallel to it rather than across it, to avoid disturbing the join.
What a Good Splice Looks Like
Done well and placed thoughtfully, a spliced installation is difficult to distinguish from a one-piece install once it's finished — especially when the seam falls along an existing frame line rather than in the open middle of the glass.
