What Is an Authorization Hold on My Card?
What Is an Authorization Hold on My Card?
It can feel alarming to open your banking app and spot one or more pending amounts you weren't expecting. These extra authorizations may look like a charge, but they're temporary, and they come from the same security checks that protect you at every Shopify store — not something specific to us.
Why Extra Authorizations Appear
| Trigger | Reason |
|---|---|
| Billing ZIP code mismatch | Your billing address is sent to the card network for verification. If even one digit is off, the attempt is declined, and your bank may still list the authorization for a few days before it clears. |
| Final tax adjustment after checkout | The estimated total is authorized first. If the actual tax comes out higher once the order is captured, the original hold is voided and a new one is requested for the correct amount. |
| Bank fraud screening or multiple clicks | Banks run instant risk scans on online purchases, and clicking "Pay" more than once can also create extra holds. Only one will ever actually be captured. |
What Happens to These Authorizations
Only one authorization is ever captured — this happens when your order is fulfilled or at the time set by the store. Any expired or voided holds fall away automatically, usually within 3 to 7 business days for credit cards. Debit cards can take a bit longer because of how funds settle with your bank.
Checkout Habits That Reduce Friction
- Keep your billing details current. Update your card's billing address as soon as you move or your apartment number changes.
- Save more than one way to pay. A backup credit card or a digital wallet (Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal) gives you an instant fallback if one method fails.
- Prefer credit cards or trusted wallets for larger purchases. Credit networks and digital wallets tend to release unused holds faster than most debit cards.
- Don't worry at "pending." A charge isn't final until it shows as "posted" or "settled" — a pending hold only reserves funds.
- Turn on transaction alerts. Real-time notifications from your bank help you spot anything genuinely suspicious right away.
If Something Still Looks Wrong
If a pending hold lingers past a week, or something feels off, contact us and a real person will review the order to make sure you're only charged once.
