This is why film-to-glass compatibility reviews are so important.
When properly selected and installed on compatible glazing systems, architectural window film can provide significant benefits while minimizing thermal stress concerns.
Why Compatibility Reviews Matter
Not every film is suitable for every type of glass.
Factors such as:
- Annealed glass
- Tempered glass
- Laminated glass
- Single-pane windows
- Dual-pane windows
- Triple-pane windows
- Low-E coatings
- Window size and orientation
can all influence thermal stress and compatibility. Shading patterns matter too: straight-line shadows across most of the glass are generally fine for clear annealed glass, angular or L-shaped shading is marginal (especially on tinted or coated glass), and narrow perimeter shading is the riskiest pattern of the three. Interior shading devices like blinds or drapery can create a similar problem by trapping heat against the glass, so a couple of inches of clearance between the treatment and the glass is generally recommended.
