How to Identify Your Glass Type
Before choosing a film, it helps to know two things about your glass: what it's made of (its strength type) and how it's built (its configuration). Both affect how much thermal stress it can safely handle once film is applied.
Glass Strength Types
Annealed (Plate / Float / Standard Glass)
The base form of flat glass, made by slowly cooling molten glass to relieve internal stress. It's the most common type and the weakest of the three, breaking into large, sharp shards, and the most vulnerable to thermal stress from film. How to identify: most older residential windows are annealed. No markings, no visible edge treatment, and not specified as safety glass generally means annealed.
Heat Strengthened (HS / Semi-Tempered)
Annealed glass reheated and cooled more rapidly, roughly doubling its strength. It's not a safety glass and still breaks into large pieces, but handles thermal stress from film significantly better than annealed. How to identify: look for a permanent etched or sandblasted corner mark showing "HS" along with the manufacturer and ASTM standard (C1048) — check carefully, since it's easy to confuse with tempered.
Tempered (Safety / Toughened Glass)
Annealed glass heated to an extreme temperature and rapidly quenched, making it about four times stronger than annealed and the most resistant to thermal stress. It's a true safety glass — it shatters into small, blunt pebbles rather than sharp shards. How to identify: required by code in many spots (shower enclosures, sliding doors, sidelights, low windows). Look for a permanent corner etching showing "Tempered" or "T" with the manufacturer and ASTM standard (C1048 or C1036). Tempered glass often shows a faint iridescent pattern through polarized sunglasses.
Glass Configurations
Any of these can exist in annealed, heat strengthened, or tempered form:
- Clear single pane: one layer of clear, uncoated glass — common pre-1980s homes, garages, sheds. No gap between panes; you can feel outdoor temperature through it easily.
- Clear dual pane: two clear layers with a sealed air/argon gap — the most common window in homes built after the 1980s. Hold a light up and you'll see two close reflections.
- Clear triple pane: three layers, two sealed gaps — used in high-efficiency or cold-climate builds. Three reflections; noticeably thicker and heavier.
- Tinted single pane: color baked into the glass during manufacturing (bronze, grey, green) — often older commercial buildings. Uniform color visible from both sides, no pane gap.
- Tinted dual pane: tinted outer pane, clear inner pane, sealed unit. Visible tint on the outer pane plus two reflections.
- Low-E dual pane: a microscopically thin low-emissivity metallic coating on one interior surface — the most common window in homes built after 2000. Faint blue-green tint at an angle; a flame held near the glass shows one of four reflections a different color.
- HP Low-E dual pane: a more aggressive Low-E coating, often on south/west-facing windows in hot climates. Stronger blue or silver reflective quality; often documented on the window label.
- Laminated (single or dual, clear or tinted): two glass layers bonded with a plastic interlayer, common in skylights, glass doors, and safety applications. Look for a visible plastic interlayer at the edge; it crazes rather than shattering into pieces when struck.
How to Confirm What You Have
- Check for a stamp. Most modern windows have a small etched corner stamp indicating tempered, heat strengthened, laminated, or Low-E/energy-efficient glass. Look closely — it can be faint.
- Review paperwork. Newer homes or buildings may have manufacturer documentation confirming pane count, coatings, and thickness.
- Ask a professional. A local installer or glazier can usually identify glass type quickly.
- Don't guess. If you can't confidently identify your glass, pause and verify first — choosing the wrong film for the wrong glass can lead to cracked glass or seal failure.
