Understanding Prep Solutions

Surface preparation is one of the most important steps in any window film installation. Even the highest-quality film can experience installation issues if the surface is not properly cleaned before application.

Prep solutions are designed to help remove contaminants and prepare surfaces for installation, creating a cleaner foundation for adhesive bonding.

What Is a Prep Solution?

A prep solution is a cleaning product used before film installation to remove dirt, oils, residues, and other contaminants from the installation surface.

Unlike slip solutions, which are used during installation, prep solutions are used during the cleaning and preparation stage.

Proper surface preparation helps create the best possible conditions for a successful installation.

Why Is Surface Preparation Important?

Contaminants left on the glass can become trapped beneath the film during installation.

This may lead to:

  • Visible contamination
  • Poor adhesion
  • Installation defects
  • Additional rework

Thorough cleaning helps reduce these risks and contributes to a cleaner finished result.

Common Surface Contaminants

Glass surfaces are often exposed to a variety of contaminants that may not be immediately visible.

Common examples include:

  • Dust and dirt
  • Fingerprints
  • Oils and grease
  • Smoke residue
  • Road grime
  • Cleaning product residue
  • Adhesive residue from previous film

Proper cleaning helps remove these contaminants before installation begins.

What Is Pre-Tac?

Pre-Tac is Flexfilm's surface preparation solution designed to help clean and prepare glass before film installation.

It is formulated to assist with removing contaminants that can interfere with installation quality and adhesive bonding.

Many installers use Pre-Tac as part of their standard preparation process before applying automotive or architectural window film.

When Should Pre-Tac Be Used?

Pre-Tac is intended for use before film installation.

It can be used during the glass cleaning process to help prepare the surface prior to applying a slip solution and mounting the film.

Pre-Tac is not intended to replace a slip solution during installation.

Why Pre-Tac Cleans Better Than Soap and Water Alone

Pre-Tac is primarily isopropyl alcohol combined with surfactants, mixed with water. The alcohol content is what makes the difference: plain water has high surface tension, which is why it beads up on a clean surface rather than spreading out. That same surface tension keeps a diluted soap-and-water mix from actually reaching the microscopic pores and cracks in the glass where oils and contaminants hide. Alcohol has essentially zero surface tension, so it spreads flat and carries the cleaning surfactants into those pores for a genuinely deep clean, not just a surface wipe.

Skip the Razor Blade

Scraping glass with a retractable razor blade used to be common practice, but it's worth avoiding on today's vehicles. Many newer cars use acoustic glass or laminated glass that's softer than older glass and can scratch under a blade. Reserve a blade for stubborn, hardened particles that a proper prep solution and scrubbing pad can't remove, and use it sparingly rather than as a default cleaning step.

Prep Solution vs Slip Solution

Prep solutions and slip solutions serve different purposes during the installation process.

Prep Solution Slip Solution
Used before installation Used during installation
Cleans and prepares surfaces Allows film positioning
Removes contaminants Improves squeegee glide
Supports adhesion Reduces adhesive grab temporarily

Most professional installations use both a prep solution and a slip solution as part of the installation process.

Automotive and Architectural Applications

Prep solutions can be used for both automotive and architectural window film installations.

In both applications, the goal is the same: create the cleanest possible surface before film is applied.

Proper preparation often contributes to better installation quality and fewer contamination-related issues.

Best Practices for Surface Preparation

  • Use clean microfiber towels.
  • Clean glass thoroughly before installation.
  • Pay special attention to edges and seals.
  • Remove any adhesive residue from previous film.
  • Inspect the glass before mounting the film.
  • Work in a clean environment whenever possible.

Consistent preparation habits often lead to more consistent installation results.

Common Preparation Mistakes

  • Rushing the cleaning process.
  • Using dirty towels.
  • Failing to clean window edges.
  • Leaving residue on the glass.
  • Skipping final surface inspections.

Many contamination issues can be traced back to inadequate surface preparation.

Can Prep Solutions Affect Installation Quality?

Absolutely.

Surface preparation is one of the most important factors influencing the appearance of the finished installation.

A clean surface helps reduce contamination, improve adhesive contact, and contribute to a more professional result.
