Common Plotter Issues
Common Plotter Issues
Plotters are reliable production tools, but like any piece of equipment, occasional issues can occur. Fortunately, many common plotter problems can be resolved quickly with basic troubleshooting.
This guide covers some of the most common issues installers encounter and provides simple steps that may help get you back up and running.
Plotter Is Not Powering On
If your plotter will not turn on, start by checking the basics.
- Verify the power cable is securely connected.
- Confirm the power outlet is functioning properly.
- Check the power switch on the plotter.
- Inspect the power cable for visible damage.
If the plotter still does not power on, contact technical support for further assistance.
Plotter Is Not Communicating With the Computer
If the plotter is not receiving jobs from your software, communication settings may need to be checked.
- Verify the USB cable is securely connected.
- Restart both the plotter and computer.
- Confirm the correct plotter is selected within the software.
- Check that any required drivers are installed.
- Try a different USB port if available.
Communication issues are often related to connection settings rather than hardware failures.
Material Is Not Tracking Straight
Tracking issues occur when the material gradually drifts left or right during cutting.
Common causes include:
- Improper material loading
- Pinch rollers not positioned correctly
- Dirty pinch rollers
- Uneven media alignment
Always ensure the material is loaded straight and the pinch rollers are properly positioned before beginning a cut.
Cuts Are Not Going Through the Material
If the blade is not cutting completely through the film, several factors may need adjustment.
- Blade depth may be too shallow.
- Cutting force may need to be increased.
- The blade may be worn or damaged.
- The blade holder may require cleaning.
Small adjustments should be made gradually and tested before running larger jobs.
Blade Is Cutting Through the Backing Liner
If the blade is cutting too deeply, excessive blade exposure or cutting force is often the cause.
- Reduce blade exposure.
- Lower cutting pressure.
- Perform a test cut before production.
Only a small amount of blade should be exposed during normal operation.
How to Actually Adjust Blade Depth
Most blade holders use a small plunger mechanism with a stopper knob that limits how far it can be tightened. To adjust blade exposure, loosen the stopper knob slightly, then turn the plunger itself in very small increments — about an eighth of a turn at a time. This adjustment is far more sensitive than it looks; a half turn is often already too much of a change.
After each small adjustment, run a test cut (a simple test oval works well) and check the result before adjusting again. It's normal to overshoot in one direction, come back the other way, and narrow in on the right depth over a few passes. Once the depth is close, fine-tune the final result with downforce (cutting pressure) rather than further blade depth changes.
As routine maintenance, periodically disassemble the blade holder and clean it with a light machine lubricant like WD-40, especially with heavy use — a clean holder makes these adjustments more predictable and repeatable.
Corners Are Lifting or Not Cutting Cleanly
If corners appear rounded, incomplete, or are lifting during weeding, the blade may require attention.
Possible causes include:
- Dull blade
- Incorrect blade offset settings
- Material movement during cutting
- Improper cutting force
Replacing the blade and verifying software settings often resolves this issue.
Jagged or Inconsistent Cuts
If cuts appear rough or uneven, inspect the following:
- Blade condition
- Blade holder cleanliness
- Material loading
- Pinch roller pressure
A worn blade is one of the most common causes of poor cut quality.
Material Slipping During Cutting
Material movement can affect cut quality and pattern accuracy.
Common causes include:
- Dirty pinch rollers
- Improper roller positioning
- Insufficient roller pressure
- Contaminated material surfaces
Regular cleaning and proper setup help minimize slipping issues.
Software Cannot Find the Plotter
If your cutting software cannot locate the plotter:
- Verify all cables are connected.
- Restart the software.
- Restart the plotter.
- Confirm the correct device is selected.
- Check any required drivers or communication settings.
Most connection issues can be resolved through basic communication troubleshooting.
Plotter Is Making Unusual Noises
Unusual noises may indicate a mechanical issue or obstruction.
Stop the machine and inspect for:
- Foreign objects
- Loose components
- Material jams
- Damaged rollers
If the noise continues, discontinue use and contact technical support.
Preventative Maintenance Tips
Routine maintenance can help prevent many common plotter issues.
- Keep pinch rollers clean.
- Replace blades as needed.
- Remove dust and debris regularly.
- Inspect cables and connections.
- Store media properly.
- Perform test cuts before large production runs.
Consistent maintenance often results in better cut quality and longer equipment life.
When to Contact Support
If basic troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, our team may be able to help.
Before contacting support, gather the following information:
- Plotter model
- Software being used
- Description of the issue
- Photos or videos if available
- Any error messages displayed
Providing detailed information helps speed up the troubleshooting process.
