Caring for Newly Installed Window Film
Caring for Newly Installed Window Film
Proper care during the first few days and weeks after installation helps ensure your window film cures correctly and delivers the appearance and performance you expect. While modern automotive window films are designed for long-term durability, the adhesive system requires time to fully bond to the glass.
Following these simple guidelines can help protect your investment and prevent unnecessary issues during the curing process.
Keep Your Windows Up
One of the most important steps after installation is keeping the windows closed.
As a general guideline, vehicle windows should remain rolled up for at least three to five days after installation, or according to your installer's recommendations.
Rolling windows down too soon can disturb the film near the edges before the adhesive has fully stabilized.
Expect a Curing Period
Window film does not reach its final appearance immediately after installation.
During the curing process, it is normal to see:
- Water pockets
- Small water bubbles
- Haze or cloudiness
- Minor distortion
- Streaking
These temporary conditions are caused by residual installation moisture and typically disappear as the film cures.
The curing process may take several days, several weeks, or longer depending on weather conditions and the type of film installed.
Avoid Cleaning the Film Immediately
Allow the film adequate time to cure before cleaning the interior surface of the windows.
As a general guideline, wait at least seven (7) days after installation before cleaning the film, per Flexfilm’s warranty care requirements, unless your installer provides different instructions.
This helps prevent unnecessary stress on the adhesive while curing is still taking place.
Use Ammonia-Free Cleaners
When cleaning window film, always use an ammonia-free glass cleaner.
Ammonia-based cleaners can damage certain window films and may negatively affect long-term appearance and performance.
Many cleaners specifically labeled as safe for tinted windows are suitable for regular maintenance.
Use Soft Cleaning Materials
To avoid scratching the film, use:
- Clean microfiber towels
- Soft lint-free cloths
- Non-abrasive cleaning tools
Avoid:
- Paper towels
- Abrasive scrub pads
- Steel wool
- Rough brushes
Using soft materials helps maintain the appearance of the film over time.
Be Careful Around Film Edges
Although professionally installed window film is designed to remain securely attached to the glass, excessive scraping or aggressive cleaning near the film edges should be avoided.
Treat the edges of the film with care during routine maintenance.
Avoid Applying Stickers or Adhesives
Do not apply decals, stickers, suction cups, adhesive mounts, or other accessories directly to newly installed film during the curing process.
These items can interfere with curing and may damage the film when removed.
Protect the Film From Sharp Objects
Window film is durable, but it can still be damaged by sharp objects.
Avoid contact with:
- Seat belt buckles
- Keys
- Tools
- Scrapers
- Other sharp objects
Taking care around the glass helps preserve the appearance of the installation.
When Should You Contact Your Installer?
Most curing-related concerns resolve naturally over time.
However, you may wish to contact your installer if you notice:
- Large bubbles that remain after the expected curing period
- Peeling film
- Edge lifting
- Creases or folds
- Significant defects visible under normal viewing conditions
Your installer can evaluate the film and determine whether corrective action is necessary.
Long-Term Maintenance Tips
Once fully cured, automotive window film requires very little maintenance.
For best results:
- Use ammonia-free cleaners.
- Clean with microfiber towels.
- Avoid abrasive materials.
- Protect the film from sharp objects.
- Inspect the film periodically for damage.
With proper care, quality automotive window film can provide years of comfort, UV protection, glare reduction, and enhanced appearance.
Quick Care Checklist
- Keep windows rolled up for at least 5 days.
- Expect temporary haze or water pockets during curing.
- Wait before cleaning newly installed film.
