Mobile Peel Board

We kept tripping over loose doors and hatch props in the tint studio, so we built a rolling peel board that goes anywhere we need a demo shot. Folks keep asking how we did it, so here is the play-by-play. Steal it, tweak it, make it better.

Why We Needed One

Our studio is tight. We cannot pull a whole car inside, but we still shoot live videos and training clips. A freestanding glass board lets us peel, heat-shrink, and squeegee without moving doors back and forth all day.

Core Specs

• Size: Four feet wide by six feet tall. Big enough for most film pieces, small enough to wheel through a standard doorway.
• Frame: Two identical rectangles made from basic two-by-fours, screwed tight and braced in the corners so nothing racks.
• Glass: Double-strength plate glass. Tempered is safer, but plate runs cheaper and scratches the same.
• Tracks: Aluminum window tracks from Home Depot, screwed to the base and soaped up before we slid the glass in place.
• Height: Top edge sits around nose level for me. Adjust to fit your crew.
• Sides: Three-quarter-inch plywood strips tie the frames together and keep the glass centered.
• Casters: Medium swivel wheels rated for the weight. Roll smooth, lock solid.

Handy Extras

• Rattle-can black paint so the board fades into the background on camera.
• A shelf-board holster drilled with a doorknob bit to park the heat gun.
• Endless add-ons: frost film for contrast, LED strip inside the frame, hooks for tools, even a white-out backside if you want a clean backdrop.

Cost Breakdown

• Glass: About 100 dollars delivered.
• Lumber, plywood, tracks, screws: Roughly 120.
• Casters, paint, odds and ends: Around 60.

Stick to the DIY route and the total lands under 300. Even if you pay a shop hand, you're still well below the price of a prefab unit.

Safety Note

Plate glass can slice if it shatters, while tempered breaks into cubes. Decide the risk level you can stomach and budget for replacements either way.
