Side Window Installation (Two Stage Method)

Ralph from Flexfilm here. Below is my full, step-by-step workflow for the two-stage method—the fastest way to tint a side window without removing the door panel or filing the glass edge.

1 · Prep Your Work Zone

2 · Rough-Cut on the Exterior

1. Dry-anchor film with a smart card—no water yet.
2. Trace the outline in Sharpie.
3. Drop the pattern ½–1″ past the top edge; never trust factory cuts.
4. Crease & mark both sides to spot any glass shift when lowering the window.

3 · Final Trim on Shop Glass

Move the pattern to a scrap pane. With a 24 ″ flimsy ruler and a fresh carbon blade:

• Cut ⅛″ outside the Sharpie on both vertical edges.
• Free-hand the bottom arc; round all four corners.

4 · Over-Shrink (Double-Snap Insurance)

Lift the film 6″, drop it, then shrink the new fingers. This inward tension blocks future moisture fingers.

5 · Glass Prep: Make-or-Break Stage

• Scrape with a stainless blade; listen for grit.
• Hard-card both vertical seals with a microfiber wrap.
• Squeegee top-to-bottom in continuous strokes—minimal water.

6 · Stage 1 Install (Top Half)

1. Peel 3–4″ of liner, mist adhesive, pinch only factory edges.
2. Float film, align a “shaved” top gap.
3. Turbo-squeegee the top third to lock the P.S. adhesive.

7 · Stage 2 Install (Bottom Half)

1. Roll window down; lift film to avoid creasing.
2. Remove liner, re-wet lightly, squeegee downward.
3. Pull tiny bottom fingers opposite ways (Double-Snap tension).
4. Tuck film ⅛″ below gasket with a Platinum EZ-Reach.

8 · Edge-Lock & Final Polish

• Hard-tool top edge once more—no lift allowed.
• Blot edges dry; moisture at seals is the enemy.
• Quick heat-gun pass on corners and micro-bubbles.
• Clean inside & out for delivery.

9 · Why It Works

Factory-tight edge: No shaving, no filing.
No panel removal: Save 10–15 min per door.
Immediate roll-down: Adhesive is locked at the edge.
